How to Store Cannabis Safely for the Long Term

Do you grow your own cannabis for medical or leisure purposes? If so, do you have a storage solution for your harvest? Cannabis is an agricultural plant that should be stored properly to keep it fresh and viable for as long as possible. Improper storage can lead to damaged roots, fungus, odor, and even mold. Keep in mind that improper storage will decrease the potency of your bud rather than extend its life. In addition to extending the longevity of your harvest, proper storage helps you maintain access to it when needed. Here are the steps for storing your cannabis safely.

Dry Your Weed Immediately

To safely store weed for the long-term, dry your harvest as soon as possible. If you’re going to store your bud for any amount of time, then this step is crucial. Be careful not to over-dry your bud, but drying out your weed will damage it. Don’t let this happen to your crop! The quickest way to get weed dry is using a dehydrator. If you don’t have one, you can also remove the stems and leaves from your plant and hang it upside down in a dark place. If you choose this method, be sure to wear gloves; the leaves and stems of your plant could be covered in resin that could be sticky and toxic.

Label Everything

If you’re trying to store weed for longer than a month or two, label everything. This includes your jar, container, the lid, and the cannabis itself. Here’s why you should label things: First, it’s a security measure. If something happens to you and someone finds your stash, they’ll know what’s inside your jar. If you live in an area with a high humidity or where the temperature fluctuates too much, the cannabis in your jars might absorb the moisture and become too wet. Labeling your jars makes it easier to know when to discard any potentially moldy or smelly buds. On top of that, labelling your jars also means you know exactly how old your buds are.  If you need to keep your jars in places with extremely high or low humidity, use something like an air-sealable bag to keep the air from touching your jars. This also keeps your jars from absorbing too much humidity from the air.

Place your buds in an air-tight container

If you’re planning to keep your bud in its original container, be sure to place it in an air-tight container. Any air in the container will cause cannabinoids to evaporate and lose potency over time. Air also contains bacteria that could contaminate your bud, so it’s best to keep it sealed and dry. If you’re planning to put your bud in an air-tight container, make sure it’s made out of a nonreactive material like stainless steel or food-grade plastic.

Store your bud in dark, cool places

If you’re going to store your bud in an air-tight container, then you’ll also want to place it in a dark and cool place. Dark places with low temperatures are key to preserving the potency of your bud. Try to avoid storing your bud in areas with extreme heat or cold. You don’t want the temperature of your bud to be outside of the ideal range for it. If you live in an urban area, you might be able to store your bud in a closet or beneath your bed. Make sure you keep your stash as dry as possible, though.

Freeze your weed

Freezing weed is a great way to preserve it. Freezing is useful because it creates a crystalline structure in the bud that protects it from damage, bacteria, and moisture. You can freeze your bud in several ways, such as placing it in a freezer bag and nipping the air out with a pair of pliers, or placing it in a container and filling it with dry ice. Dry ice is a solid form of carbon dioxide that’s used in commercial food storage. It prevents the bud from absorbing moisture, so it’s a great way to preserve it. Freezing can keep weed fresh for up to three years. Make sure you thaw it out slowly and don’t let it thaw at room temperature, as that can damage the cannabis. Try to thaw your bud in the fridge overnight or in a bowl of hot water. Try to avoid letting it thaw out at room temperature.

Know when to discard old marijuana

When should you throw away your old weed? This depends on how you store it. If you store your weed in a cool and dark place, it’s best to discard the old bud after 2 years. If you store your bud in a freezer and it remains there for 2 years, it’s best to throw it away.

Bottom line

To make the most out of your harvest, store it properly. If you’ve properly dried your bud, labeled everything, stored it in a dark and cool place, and frozen it, then it has a chance of lasting you years. Proper bud storage means not only preserving the potency of your bud, but also protecting it from light and moisture. If you’ve done these things, then you have bud that will last you years.  Visit MMJExpress.cc online dispensary for all your cannabis needs.
